The first half of the Toyota Camry Hybrid drivetrain is a 147 horsepower version of the standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that runs on a more efficient Atkinson cycle. The second half is a 105-kW electric motor and a 245-volt battery pack that delivers a peak of 40 hp. The battery pack consists of 34 nickel-metal hydride modules, each of which contains six 1.2-volt cells. Run it all through a continuously variable transmission, and it adds up to 187 horsepower, versus the standard Camry's 169 hp. The Toyota Camry Hybrid underwent a mid-cycle update in 2010 and received new styling cues. To better differentiate the hybrid version from the gasoline-powered lineup, the Camry Hybrid now has a somewhat aggressive looking face with a single-blade grille, a large center air dam and outboard vertical fog-lamps. Still, with just a couple of hybrid badges that adorn the exterior, the Toyota Camry Hybrid doesn’t shout “hybrid” when you drive it. For the 2011 model year there are no significant exterior, interior or drivetrain changes.

Automobile magazine noted, “The 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid can be a little sluggish when starting from a stop, but it then gets up to speed fairly rapidly.” In terms of handling, the Toyota Camry Hybrid is more than competent. It corners well and offers plenty of driver feedback. But the Toyota Camry Hybrid is best known for its ride quality. It offers a smooth and compliant feel that makes it ideal for long trips and daily commuting.

Mechanicals underneath the modded skin is essentially the same as the American Camry hybrid that is currently on sale in the United States, including the 4-cylinder engine assisted by an electric motor.

The Toyota Camry Hybrid’s sophisticated hybrid powertrain can run solely on electric power at low speeds and while coasting on the highway, and the electric motor provides a tangible kick during hard acceleration, particularly at higher speeds. Otherwise, though, the Camry Hybrid is virtually indistinguishable from a regular Camry. As such, expect a spacious cabin, comfortable seats and a driving experience that isolates you from the outside world. Notably, the Nissan Altima Hybrid shares the Camry Hybrid’s powertrain while providing a more engaging driving experience, but the Nissan is only available in California and the seven states that currently follow that state’s tailpipe regulations: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. Also, the Altima isn’t as cosseting as the Camry.
